Tell it to the marines

My six-year old girl astonished my by imparting this advice when I told her that 'Daddy was puffed-out'. Had no idea kids still used it.Is it current in the US, and what's the skinny on it?

I never heard it in US,or anywhere for that matter. What was said, now forgotten, is "Tell it to the judge."

Been in that bastion of knowledge, Calif., that long. As I gave my negative reply I was going to say you'd know- well I was rite. Seriosly, tho'-never heard it , seen it or knew anything about it.

aldi-just for speed -not too quick w/ fingers. Nite , rite, are just very informal. Seen a lot on markets,e.g., Buy Rite, Open All Nite etc. Seem about equally spread around US. One of our 1st low...

"Rite" remains in the domain of the net. Like "enuf", "tho", "shud", "bcoz"."(To)nite" is a little widerspread. As is "thru" and maybe the b-less "coz".

A longer version of the phrase, also attested early, is "tell it to the marines, the sailors won't believe it". The implication seems to be that the marines are credulous and not too bright.
